Every Rust monument guide you've ever read was written for vanilla. It tells you Launch Site is dangerous because someone will hear the Bradley die and rush you with an AK. It tells you to bring a throwaway kit to Military Tunnels because you will lose it. It ranks monuments by how likely you are to get shot in them.
None of that applies here. On a PVE server the entire calculus changes: no one is camping the Launch Site tunnel, no one takes the elite crate thirty seconds before you get there, and losing a hazmat suit costs you a trip home, not a wipe. What's left is a much cleaner question — how much loot does this monument produce, and how long does it take me to clear it?
That's what this ranking measures. Below you'll find a PVE tier list, a loot-versus-difficulty chart for the whole map, a filterable table of every monument's keycard and radiation requirements, and the run order we'd recommend to a player starting fresh on a wipe.

What Changes When You Remove PVP
Three things drive monument difficulty in vanilla Rust: other players, scientists, and radiation. Take the first one away and the ranking reshuffles dramatically.
High tiers open early
In vanilla, Launch Site is a mid-to-late wipe monument because you need a kit you can afford to lose. In PVE you can run it on day one with a bow, a hazmat and patience. Time, not gear, becomes the gate.
Loot per hour is the only metric
Nobody is contesting the loot room, so the question stops being "can I hold this" and becomes "how many runs can I do before respawn timers catch up". Short, dense monuments win.
Puzzles become the real cost
Keycards and fuses are consumables. A monument that eats a red card and two fuses per run has a genuine cost attached, even when it's mechanically safe.
Scientists are the boss fight
With no players to worry about, NPC count and NPC accuracy are what actually kill you. Military Tunnels' heavy scientists stay genuinely dangerous no matter what server you're on.
The PVE Monument Tier List
Ranked on loot value per run weighted against time, puzzle cost and scientist threat. A monument that gives good loot in four minutes beats one that gives great loot in twenty.
How to read this list
S is the top of the scale, not the bottom. It's the standard tier-list ranking used across gaming — S sits above A, then it runs down the alphabet:
What the rank measures: loot value per run, divided by the time and cost it takes to get it — where cost means keycards, fuses, radiation gear and scientist risk. It is not a measure of raw loot. Launch Site holds more loot than the Excavator, but the Excavator ranks alongside it because you can run it far sooner and far faster.
A low rank doesn't mean "skip it" — D tier is where your first keycard comes from. It means "don't build your evening around it."
Build your session around these. The best loot-per-hour on the map. If you can run one, run it.
Excellent once you have the cards. Strong, repeatable runs — the backbone of a geared player's rotation.
Worth the trip, especially en route. Decent payout for modest effort — these carry you through the mid-game.
Go for a reason, not for loot. A specific item, a recycler, a vendor — not somewhere you farm.
Where every wipe begins. Free green keycards, fuses and recyclers, with no radiation and no scientists. Essential early, skippable later.
If you're on day one of a wipe, start at the bottom of this list and work up — D tier is what unlocks everything above it.
Loot Value vs. Difficulty
The same data plotted. Anything up and to the left is efficient: strong loot for modest effort. Anything down and to the right is a trap — hard work for a mediocre payout.
Notice how far left the Excavator sits. It's a green-card-tier puzzle that produces sulfur, HQM and metal fragments in quantities no other monument touches — and on a PVE server nobody is going to hear the engine start and come take it from you.
The Keycard Chain
You cannot walk into Launch Site on a fresh spawn. Rust gates its best monuments behind a three-step card progression, and every red-card monument is downstream of a green card you picked up in a supermarket. Here's the whole chain in one picture.
Fuse counts and card combinations get adjusted by Facepunch between updates. The chain above is stable, but check the door before you burn a card — some monuments want a green and a blue for the same run.

The S Tier, Explained
Four monuments earn the top spot for very different reasons. Here's why each one is worth building your session around.
Giant Excavator Pit
The single best resource generator in Rust. Power the engine, pick your ore type, and it produces sulfur, high quality metal and stone in volumes that would take hours of node farming. The puzzle is trivial and the scientist presence is light — the only real cost is the diesel.
Small Oil Rig
The efficiency king. A tight vertical monument with a locked crate at the top, scientists you can pull one at a time, and a fast reset. Take a boat, clear it, recycle on site, leave. Best loot-per-minute in the game once you know the stair routes.
Launch Site
The biggest single payout on the map — multiple elite crates, a red card room, and the Bradley APC dropping high-tier components and weapons. It's slow and it demands a hazmat, but on a PVE server you can take the Bradley down at your own pace with no one stealing the crates.
Large Oil Rig
The densest elite crate concentration anywhere. Heavy scientists on the upper decks make it a genuine fight, and the timed locked crate means committing to holding the rig for several minutes. Worth it — a clean run funds an entire wipe.
The Optimal PVE Monument Run
If you're starting a fresh wipe and want to reach red-card monuments as fast as possible, this is the order. The whole loop is comfortably doable in an evening on a PVE server.
-
1
Roadside sweep — grab a green card and fuses
Hit Abandoned Supermarket, Oxum's Gas Station and Mining Outpost. Zero radiation, zero scientists, and all three have recyclers. You're looking for a
Green Keycardand at least twoElectric Fusesbefore moving on. -
2
The Dome — early scrap without a puzzle
No card needed. Climb the outside, loot the crates on the way up. It's the best scrap-per-minute monument available to you before you own a single keycard, and the radiation is low enough to survive in basic clothing.
-
3
Satellite Dish or Sewer Branch — convert green into blue
Both are low radiation, short, and lightly defended. Bring your green card and a fuse. Walk out with a
Blue Keycard. Satellite Dish is the faster of the two if you're not confident with scientists yet. -
4
Giant Excavator Pit — fund everything else
Detour here as soon as you can carry diesel. Run the sulfur or HQM output while you're in the area. This is the step most players skip and it's the reason their wipe stalls out at Tier 2 workbench.
-
5
Train Yard or Airfield — convert blue into red
Medium radiation, so bring a hazmat or a solid rad-resist set. Train Yard is the more forgiving layout; Airfield pays better crates on the way through. Either one hands you a
Red Keycard. -
6
Small Oil Rig — start the loot loop
With a blue card and a boat you now have a repeatable, high-yield monument on a short timer. Most PVE players settle into an Excavator → Small Rig rotation at this stage and gear up fast.
-
7
Launch Site and Military Tunnels — the payoff
Full hazmat, meds, and a rifle you're comfortable with. Take the Bradley from cover and let the scientists come to you in the tunnels. On a PVE server you can learn these two properly — die, walk back, try again, no one loots your body.
Radiation Gear Cheat Sheet
Radiation is the most common reason a monument run ends early. A standard Hazmat Suit covers every ground monument in the game as long as you keep moving through the hot pockets rather than standing in them.
| Gear | Rad Protection | Good enough for |
|---|---|---|
| Hazmat Suit | 50% | Every ground monument, including Launch Site |
| Nomad / Frontier / Abyss / Space Suit | 50% | Same as hazmat — cosmetic variants |
| Arctic Suit | 33% | Arctic Research Base; trades rads for cold |
| Snow Jacket | 20% | Stacking piece for low-rad monuments |
| Wetsuit | 15% | Oil rigs and Underwater Labs |
| Hoodie + Pants + Coffee Can Helmet | ~15% | Low-rad only: Dome, Satellite Dish, Junkyard |
| Road Sign Armor / Metal Facemask | 0% | Bullets, not radiation — pair with rad gear |
Two spots stay dangerous even in a full hazmat: the Vehicle Assembly Building at Launch Site and the broken cooling tower at Power Plant. Loot them fast, carry anti-rad pills, and don't stand still reading crate contents.
Five Mistakes That Waste Monument Runs
Burning a red card on the wrong door
Cards are consumed. Walking into Launch Site with one red card and opening the first door you find instead of the one you actually wanted costs you an entire tier-2 run to replace.
Bringing one fuse
Fuses burn out on a timer, not on use. If you're slow through a puzzle the fuse dies mid-run and you're locked out. Carry two, always.
Hauling components home
Every monument in the table above has a recycler. Recycle on site and carry scrap and components instead of bulk junk — you'll fit two or three times as much value in the same inventory.
Ignoring food and water
Long monuments like Launch Site and Military Tunnels will run you dry. Nothing worse than clearing the red card room and dying to dehydration on the walk home.
Skipping the Excavator
It's the fastest route from Tier 2 to Tier 3 workbench in the game and most players walk past it because it doesn't drop weapons. Resources are the bottleneck.
Not setting a bag first
Drop a sleeping bag near any monument you plan to run repeatedly. On a PVE server nobody's going to find and destroy it, so respawn distance is a solved problem — if you bother to solve it.
That last one pairs naturally with a full respawn network — spread bags near your regular monument circuit and you'll cut walking time across an entire wipe. We'll be covering that setup in a dedicated guide soon.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does S tier mean?
S tier is the highest rank, above A — tier lists run S, A, B, C, D from best to most situational. The convention comes from Japanese game rankings, where S stood for "Special" and sat above the normal A-to-D scale. In this ranking, a monument's tier measures loot value per run divided by the time and cost to get it, where cost means keycards, fuses, radiation gear and scientist risk. It's not a measure of raw loot — Launch Site holds more than the Giant Excavator Pit, but both are S tier because the Excavator can be run far sooner and far faster.
What is the best Rust monument for loot in PVE?
Large Oil Rig and Launch Site give the highest raw payout per run, but the best loot per hour for most PVE players comes from the Giant Excavator Pit and Small Oil Rig. The Excavator produces sulfur and high quality metal at a rate no other monument matches, for a green-card-tier puzzle. Small Oil Rig has dense crates and a short reset timer.
Which Rust monuments don't require a keycard?
Abandoned Supermarket, Oxum's Gas Station, Mining Outpost, Lighthouse, Ranch, Large Barn, Stables, Junkyard and The Dome have no puzzle at all. Outpost, Bandit Camp and Fishing Village are safe zones with vendors and recyclers. These are where you farm your first green keycards and scrap.
How much radiation protection do I actually need?
A Hazmat Suit at 50% covers every ground monument. Roadside monuments have no radiation. Satellite Dish, Sewer Branch, Harbor, Junkyard and The Dome are low enough to run in basic clothing. Launch Site, Military Tunnels, Power Plant and Radtown want a full hazmat and some anti-rad pills.
Are monuments easier on a PVE server?
Substantially. No one can shoot you, camp the exit, or beat you to the loot room. Scientists, radiation and the puzzle are the only obstacles left — which means high-tier monuments open up much earlier in a wipe and you can learn the routes without losing kit every attempt.
How often do monument crates respawn?
Normal crates and barrels cycle on a roughly 15 to 30 minute timer depending on type, while locked crates on the oil rigs run on their own longer schedule. In practice a two-monument rotation gives the first one time to reset by the time you're done with the second.
